Anatomical: immunohistochemistry and retrograde/anterograde tract tracing.

Immunohistochemistry can be used to visualize the location of proteins of interest in neural tissue.

A combination of retrograde tracing techniques and immunohistochemistry reveals which neurons within the ventral tegmental area are activated (fos) by a given treatment.
