My research focuses on the study of prejudice from a self-regulatory perspective. To the extent that nonprejudiced responding can be conceptualized as an act of self-regulation, we can assess the types of standards that individuals monitor in prejudice-relevant situations, as well as how they behave in line with those standards, and the affective and behavioral implications of successfully conforming to or failing to conform to such standards. Of particular interest is the idea that regulating the expression of prejudice may have psychic costs, manifested in impaired self-regulatory function in concurrent and subsequent endeavors. Current research is aimed at assessing when, why, and among whom such self-regulatory impairment is manifested.
