I am exploring how racial attitudes are influenced
by targets’ socioeconomic status. In past semesters,
we have used both self-report and implicit measures to examine
attitudes toward different SES/race groups (e.g., poor Blacks,
upper middle-class Whites, etc.). The findings from these
studies have consistently shown that upper middle-class people
(both Black and White) are evaluated much more positively
than lower-class people, and interestingly, lower-class Whites
are evaluated even more negatively than lower-class Blacks.
One reason for this disparity may be that poor Blacks are
not be seen as entirely to blame for their poverty (because
of discrimination) while poor Whites are. I am currently looking
at how attitudes towards Blacks and Whites of differing SES
levels might be rooted in people’s values and attributions
for economic success or failure.
