SUMMARY:Colloquium Series: Victoria Plaut (UC Berkeley)
DESCRIPTION:Diversity Science: Conceptions and Approaches to Diversity and Inclusion and their Consequences \nIntergroup relations don’t occur in a vacuum. They unfold with respect to certain conceptions of what diversity is and how to approach it. These are embedded in a larger set of institutions and practices (e.g.\, the legal system) and help to reinforce structural realities. This talk will first examine how conceptions of diversity are inscribed in institutions and can influence intergroup outcomes. Then we will examine different approaches to diversity (e.g.\, multiculturalism and colorblindness) and their implications. Finally\, we turn to the consequences of addressing diversity and inclusion\, especially in higher education\, by looking at identity and threat-based reactions that may undergird backlash. By examining these socioculturally-grounded meanings\, diversity science offers a useful tool to examine psychological dimensions of intergroup dynamics and inequality. \nTalk held in room 107 of Brogden Psychology Building. \nFor information regarding the talk contact uwcsc@googlegroups.com. \n\nDr. Plaut will also be leading the diversity town-hall meeting at noon on 11/29. \nIf you would like to attend please RSVP: http://evite.me/Wm9GkD5AQn \n
