SUMMARY:Sharon M. Guten Colloquium Series: Rich Lee\, University of Minnesota
DESCRIPTION:\nTitle: Racial socialization practices among Asian Americans and their families \n\nAbstract: During the COVID19 pandemic\, there has been an increase in anti-Asian hate and violence. It is therefore critically important to understand how Asian Americans and their families talk about racism\, prejudice\, and discrimination. In this presentation\, I will draw upon an Asian Americanist perspective to understand the challenges and opportunities for Asian Americans in the midst of rising anti-Asian racism. I will review past studies my colleagues and I have conducted examining racial socialization practices in diverse Asian American families. These studies employ quantitative\, qualitative\, and mixed-method approaches and draw upon different types of family formations. I also will discuss new ways to move forward in scholarship and practice with a specific focus on how comics can be a relatable\, approachable way to publicly engage in conversations about racial socialization.\n\nThis colloquium will be held virtually via Zoom. Please register here.\n
