We are committed to providing support to all our students. Support may be
in the form of fellowships, scholarships, and teaching, research, and
project assistantships all of which qualify the graduate student for full
remission of tuition.

Fellowships
There are several types of fellowships available. The university has a
campus-wide fellowship competition, and a number of our entering psychology
graduate students receive them each year. You will be considered for this
competition upon completion of your application materials. Successful
candidates are notified in early March. Other on-campus fellowships and
scholarships are available. You should also consider applying for
fellowships sponsored by many federal and non-federal agencies (such as
National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Fulbright-Hays). An applicant who has been awarded a
national fellowship has a high probability of being admitted to our
program. If you receive a fellowship in a national competition, please notify the Psychology Graduate Office, gradinfo@psych.wisc.edu. There are special forms and deadlines, often in the fall, for
these programs, and information is available from the Graduate School
Fellowship Office or from your undergraduate institution. We conduct
workshops for graduate students on writing grant and fellowship proposals.
Assistantships
Teaching assistantships afford financial aid to graduate students as well
as opportunities for acquiring valuable teaching experience. The stipend
depends upon the time devoted to departmental duties. Research and project
assistantships permit you to assist in a research program which may
contribute to requirements for your doctoral thesis. The psychology
department selects its teaching, research, and project assistants according
to their scholarly promise and ability to perform the required duties. You
will automatically be considered for these assistantships when you apply
for admission.
Advanced Opportunity Fellowships
To be a candidate for these fellowships, you must be a permanent resident and a
financially needy member of one of the following minority groups:
Afro-American; Native Americans or Alaskan Natives; Mexican
Americans/Chicano (a)/ Puerto Ricans; Cambodians, Hmong,
Laotians, and Vietnamese; or an economically disadvantaged non-minority
person. The psychology department will nominate eligible applicants
following application, and awards are normally announced in late March.

Fees and Tutition
Fees and tuition are subject to change without notice. Fees and tuition for
graduate students for 2003-04 were $3,796.39 per semester for Wisconsin
residents, and $11,431.59 per semester for nonresidents (See the UW
Registrar Web Site for the most up-to-date information http://registrar.wisc.edu/students/fees_tuition/tuition.php Graduate students who are
classified as nonresidents of Wisconsin and who hold an appointment as a
teaching, research, or project assistant are granted tuition at the resident
level in any semester in which their appointment equals at least 33 percent
of their full-time appointment for the semester. Students who are Minnesota residents may be eligible for
resident tuition under the Minnesota-Wisconsin reciprocity agreement. Upon
admission to candidacy for the doctorate, tuition is decreased.
Health Care
Services are available at the University Health Services to all full-time
students and all part-time students who have paid the health care fee. The
health care fee is included in the registration fees. A wide variety of
outpatient medical and nursing services are offered at the clinic, but it
is important to realize that there are certain limitations.
Hospitalization, emergency room visits, and medication, for instance, are
not included. Insurance covering hospital and emergency services is
strongly recommended. Graduate students who are appointed as teaching,
research, and project assistants receive health insurance benefits.
Minority Services and Programs
The University of Wisconsin - Madison maintains a strong commitment to
recruiting minority graduate students and thereby increasing the pool of
potential minority faculty, researchers, and professionals. The
Graduate participates in a number of
programs to inform prospective minority students of research opportunities,
both here and elsewhere. The Advanced Opportunity Fellowship Program, the
Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) Minority Fellowship Program,
and the Patricia Roberts Harris Fellowship Program are among several
fellowship opportunities available for minority graduate students attending
the UW-Madison. The University has a variety of support services to assist
students in the transition from undergraduate to graduate study.
