Who Should Apply For Graduate School

Minimum Standards: All applicants will be considered. However, it is extremely rare for the Department of Psychology to offer admission to those who do not meet the following standards:

- Bachelor's degree in psychology or other relevant areas.
- 3.00 on a 4-point scale (see "For Clinical Applicants" below)
- Verbal + quantitative scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) of 1200 (see "For Clinical Applicants" below)
- TOEFL score of 550 for those students whose native language is not English


For Clinical Applicants: the Clinical Area Group has adopted the following minimum criteria: (a) [(Undergraduate GPA) x (393.9)] + [(GRE verbal score) + (GRE quantitative score)] must be equal to or greater than 2600; and (b) commitment to a research career.

- Letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically.

- Our department requires the GRE General Test. The department strongly recommends that applicants also take the Psychology Subject Test of the GRE, or if the student was not a psychology major, the subject test of the GRE that is closest to the student's undergraduate major. GRE registration information may be obtained at:

To insure timely receipt of GRE scores, please use Institution Code 1846 when completing the "Score Report Recipients" section of the GRE Registration form.

- SPEAK test required for international students applying for a teaching assistantship.
