I focus on the basal, acute and chronic effects of cytokines in coupling anxiety and stress reactivity, as well as emotional and social dysfunction. These pyrogenic proteins are upregulated in those with affective and developmental disorders, as well as during mild to moderate stress induction. I model the effect of exogenous stressors on clinical populations using a non-human primate model: the rhesus monkey (macaca mulatta). I am currently conducting a longitudinal development study looking at the long-term effects of inflammation during second trimester gestation on the neural, immunologic, social and behavioral development of monkey offspring.
I use in vitro, observational, behavioral, and neuroimaging techniques to holistically assess the sequelae of inflammatory induction and their interactions.
