I am particularly interested in human motivation, and my research builds on theories of Expectancy-Value, Achievement Goals, Intrinsic Motivation, and Interest. Specifically, I address three interrelated questions in my work: 1) what are the situational factors (e.g., value, goals) that lead to optimal levels of intrinsic motivation and performance in learning contexts, 2) how do cultural variations in self-construal and individual differences in interest and perceived competence moderate responses to these factors, and 3) what are the processes that can explain the moderating cross-cultural and individual difference effects? To address these questions, I take a multi-method approach, by using experiments to re-create strong learning situations in a laboratory environment, and field studies to track the development of motivational processes as they unfold in a naturalistic setting.
