A Tradition of Excellence

The University of Wisconsin - Psychology Department's tradition of excellence began with our founder, Joseph Jastrow.

Over the past 50 years six of our faculty have been awarded the American Psychological Association’s Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award, the highest individual honor in the field. These winners were or are Wisconsin faculty:

    1956 Carl Rogers
    1960 Harry Harlow
    1990 Frances Graham
    1993 Peter Lang
    1996 Robert Goy
    2000 Richard Davidson

And here's a sampling of other recent accomplishments:

Wisconsin Top-5 by departmental impact factor
ISI has released its ranking by average citations per paper, of the top 100 federally funded U.S. universities that published at least 300 papers in Thomson Scientific-indexed psychology journals between 2000 and 2004. In it, the UW-Madison ranks #5 in citations per paper, and #2 in overall number of papers. For more information, visit ISI Essential Science Indicators.

December 2005
Wisconsin Top-5 among Clinical Psychology PhD programs
In a recent peer-reviewed study* "based on quantifiable measures of faculty publications and citations," UW-Madison ranked #1 in citation ranking, and #9 in number of publications ranking, for a composite ranking of #3. The authors characterize this study as "the first study to rank clinical psychology Ph.D. programs on objective and systematic data of individual faculty" and note that because "the number of publications and citations are typically used to evaluate faculty for promotion and tenure, " these rankings have "a level of validity in assessing prominence that is not present in survey data" that is typically used in rankings that are published in the popular press.

Two of the ten governance positions at APS are now held by Wisconsin faculty.
