Department receives Presidential Citation from APA
American Psychological Association presents this Presidential Citation to
Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison
In recognition of the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin,
Madison, for its exemplary support of psychological science and the American
Psychological Association for more than a century. Beginning with the
establishment of Joseph Jastrow's laboratory in 1888, Wisconsin has
attracted some of the country's most outstanding psychological scientists.
These scholars and their students have produced tens of thousands of articles
over a wide range of topics in psychology, making a rich contribution to the
development of the field. Wisconsin faculty members Joseph Jastrow, Harry
Harlow, and Frank Farley have honored the Association by serving as APA President
, and several have received APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Awards.
Currently four faculty members edit APA journals, and several others serve as
leaders in the APA governance system, including the Publications and Communications
Board and the Board of Scientific Affairs. APA greatly appreciates the outstanding
individual contributions of these distinguished scientists and the
department's
legacy of extraordinary service to the discipline.

Department welcomes two senior psycholinguists
Chair Janet Hyde announced today that internationally renowned cognitive scientists Mark Seidenberg and Maryellen MacDonald have accepted an offer to join the Department of
Psychology. Both will join the department's Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience area group.
Seidenberg's research addresses many basic issues concerning the nature of language, its
acquisition and use, and its brain bases. His research employs connectionist modeling,
behavioral (including neuropsychological) testing, and fMRI experiments. Details about
his research program can be found at http://lcnl.wisc.edu. MacDonald's
research interests include sentence processing and language production, domains that
she explores via behavioral and fMRI studies of healthy young and elderly participants,
and of patients with Alzheimer's disease, including estrogen manipulations in these groups.
Details about her research program can be found at http://lcnl.wisc.edu.
They are expected to be permanently relocated to the Brogden Psychology Building by the
start of the Fall 2001 semester.
These two new hires add appreciably to an already strong emphasis on audition, communication,
and language research in the Department of Psychology, as evidenced by the research interests
of Professors Alibali, Gernsbacher, Glenberg, Jenison, Kluender, Saffran, Snowdon,
and Wightman.
