GET EXPERIENCE

For both the job search and graduate school application process related experience is important.  Read below to find out how to get the experience while in college:

Work Experience:
            Part-time

  • While in college many students will work part-time while attending school full-time.  This can be demanding, but if you are successful in balancing school and work it can speak highly about your potential as an employee or future graduate student.
  • Having a part-time job can also show an employer that you are willing to stay with one company over a long period of time, showing commitment.
  • Any part-time job can show strengths of yours, but some might be a better fit for you than others.  The Letters and Science Career Services Center and the Psychology Undergraduate Advisor can help you find ways to look for relevant part-time experiences.

Summer Work

  • Often summer employment allows students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a field without having a full-time course load.  This can be here in Madison, at your hometown, or in another part of the country.

Internships

  • An internship is a way for students to get supervised practical training in their field of interest.
  • Internships are available as paid, unpaid, or for credit.  Different policies and requirements may exist depending on which type of internship you partake in.
  • The Letters and ScienceCareer Services Center and the Psychology Undergraduate Advisor can help you find ways to look for relevant internships.

Volunteering

  • Without the regular commitment of a job or internship, volunteering offers both long and short-term opportunities to gain experience.
  • The Morgridge Center (http://www.morgridge.wisc.edu/volunteer.html) compiles volunteer opportunities for students online.  They also have staff available to assist students in finding a volunteer opportunity that is a good fit for their interests.

Student Organizations

  • Being active in a student organization shows your desire to grow professionally to employers.  They can also help you stay up-to-date in your field.
  • Psi Chi is a National Honorary Society in Psychology and the Madison chapter is an active one.  Students participate in activities that help them grow professionally.  To find out more check out the Psi Chi website.
  • To find out more about other student organizations, check out the Student Organization Office. (http://soo.studentorg.wisc.edu/)

Research

    • Research is an excellent way to further examine the field of psychology- especially for any student considering graduate school.  To find out more about the research opportunities that exist in the Department of Psychology check out our current opportunities section or contact a faculty member directly on their research foci.
