Honors in Psychology Q & A:

Q:  When can I apply for Honors?
A:  Applications for Honors in the Major can be submitted as early as the end of a student’s freshman year and is typically made before the end of the sophomore year.  Occasionally admission is granted during the junior year as well. You do not need to be declared in order to apply for honors in the major. Since the Sophomore Honors Seminar is required, applying during your freshman year is encouraged.  ***Applications are accepted each semester and due October 15th and February 15th *** If the deadline falls on a weekend the application will be due the following Monday.

Q:  When can I enroll in Honor’s courses?
A:  Prior to formal admission to Honors in the Major, students may enroll in Honors Psychology courses if they are currently in the Honors in Liberal Arts program, you may enroll in an honors seminar if you receive consent of the instructor.

Q:  What does it take to be accepted into the Honors Program?
A:  Acceptance into the Honors in the Major is based on a student’s…

  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to scholastic achievement
  • Performance in coursework at UW-Madison (Particularly honors courses and courses in Psychology)
  • Civic engagement (volunteer work and extracurricular activities) at UW-Madison and the broader community
  • Commitment to excellence in the science of Psychology
  • Evidence of broad scholarship (including humanities, mathematics, and sciences)

These same standards must be maintained to remain in the Honors Program following admission.  Decisions on admission are made each semester by a committee of Psychology faculty.

Requirements for Honors in Psychology

In addition to requirements for the Psychology major…
Requirements for Honors in Psychology are as follows:

  • Sophomore Honors Seminar, Psychology 386 (Must be taken both Fall and Spring semesters - in that order, Sophomore or Junior year, Sophomore year preferred)
  • One Level II Course* for Honors in either
    • Biological Psychology (Psychology 484/485, 489) - OR -
    • Cognitive and Perceptual Sciences (Psychology 414/481, 413/483)
  • One Level II Course* for Honors in either
    • Clinical (Psychology 509/589) - OR -
    • Developmental (Psychology 560/580) - OR -
    • Social and Personality (Psychology 409/487, 488 528/588, 530/585, 587)
  • Senior Honors Thesis, Psychology 681 & 682 (Fall and Spring Semesters)
  • Senior Honors Seminar, Psychology 686 (Fall and Spring semesters concurrent with Honors Thesis)

Recommended/Optional coursework for the Honors degree in Psychology:

  • Honors Introduction to Psychology, Psychology 281 (typically offered Fall and Spring)
  • Honors Psychometric Methods Psychology 280 (typically offered Fall)
  • Honors Experimental Psychology, Psychology 285 (not consistently offered, discuss a green sheet contract with professor to earn honors credit, forms available in room 307 South Hall)
