Faculty member: Keith R. Kluender

Project title:  Human and animal models of speech perception

Number of positions typically available each semester: 8-10

Minimum number of credit hours required: Flexible, between 1-3 credits

Number of semesters student is expected to participate: Only 1 semester is required, but many of our undergraduate assistants stay for several semesters.

Project description:
In our lab, we explore how speech is perceived. The questions we ask include:

  • How do infants learn the speech sounds of a native language?
  • Is speech perceived by specialized brain mechanisms or by more general perceptual processes?
  • What is the role of experience in perception?
In attempting to answer these questions, we use human and nonhuman animal models. For more information on our research (and to see pictures of the animals!), check out our Wisconsin Speech Perception Laboratory web site.

Description of student’s responsibilities including required skills and knowledge (e.g., computer programming, familiarity with SPSS): Undergraduate research assistants typically work in either our human laboratory or our animal laboratory, but there is also the possibility of dividing time for experience with both. Students interested in working with our animals (Chinchillas) should be comfortable handling small animals. All of our animal experiments are noninvasive, behavioral studies and only minimal animal-care responsibilities (e.g., feeding, weighing) are required. All applicants should be responsible and be able to work independently. Some computer work is required, but no previous knowledge is necessary - we will teach you what you'll need to know. For those interested, there is the opportunity to conduct independent research or work on computational modeling projects.
