Faculty member: Prof. Colleen Moore
Project title: Psychology of Environmental Issues
Number of positions typically available each semester: 2-4
Minimum number of credit hours required: 2-3
Number of semesters student is expected to participate:
Project description: We are studying various aspects of human behavior
and attitudes with respect to environmental issues. One project is on perception
of hazards to the natural environment and oneself. We are studying gender
differences in risk perception, and also perception of reproductive hazards.
Another project is on environmental ethics. How does moral reasoning about
environmental issues develop? A third project is on the relationships between
attitudes, risk perception and decision making about environmental issues
(e.g., siting waste disposal facilities, etc.). This is an excellent opportunity
to develop a senior thesis project in a setting with personal supervision
directly from the professor.
Description of student’s responsibilities including required skills
and knowledge (e.g., computer programming, familiarity with SPSS)
The first semester in my lab students attend weekly lab meetings
(in a group of 4-6 people) to hear about the ongoing research, help with
the design of the questionnaires etc., help with data collection and data
entry, and also learn to do data analyses with SPSS. Students are encouraged
to begin developing a research idea during that first semester also.
In further semesters, the student is expected to be part of the "team"
in data collection etc., but takes primary responsibility for his or her
own project, reports to the lab group on progress etc. We eat cookies and
have fun at lab meetings, in addition to learning…
