Academic Advisor Madeline Fer Chapman

UWPsych: What excites you about working as an academic advisor with the Department of Psychology?

I’m very enthusiastic about Academic Advising and love UW Madison. This position is a perfect fit because I am also really passionate about Psychology and Mental Health.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

This past March, I Ied a Concurrent Session at the NACADA Regional Conference in Chicago which has been a longtime goal of mine. I presented on David Brook’s Pop Psychology book ‘ How To Know A Person’, how it related to instrumental advising theories, and how to apply it to advising practices.

What was the best advice you received as a college student?

My most valuable piece of advice is simple. READ YOUR EMAIL! Although I’m sure your inbox is overflowing, email is the best way for campus to let you know about academic information, fun events ( maybe with free food or swag), and important deadlines. Reading your email is also a professional skill that will follow you throughout your career.

UWPsych: What else should we know about you?

Some of my interests include cats, crocheting, and traveling ( favorite destinations include New Orleans, Disneyland, and England). In undergrad, I studied psychology & pseudoscience abroad in London at the University of Birkbeck. And I studied theatre in undergrad, so I always make sure to go all the UW Madison Theatre Department productions–they’re amazing!
