Professor Emeritus Charles Snowdon spoke with WPR’s Al Ross in early February about the relationship between animals and music. His research shows that music can influence the emotional state of an animal. In a study with felines in their homes, Snowdon found that cat music – that is, music that includes ultrasound frequencies that only cats can hear and musical patterns that mirror cat purrs and kitten mews – elicited a positive reaction from the cats.
A recent article shows that the digital music service Spotify has even created playlists for your pet, combining the science with their own survey data to create playlists both human and animal will enjoy, despite the fact animals and humans don’t hear all the same frequencies of sound, Snowdon pointed out.
