Environment
The Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is one of the top research psychology departments in the country, with internationally recognized scholars in each of five broad disciplinary categories: biological; clinical; cognition and cognitive neuroscience; developmental; and social. There is also strong representation of several domains of behavior that cut across these categories, including emotion, language, memory, developmental disorders, and intergroup dynamics.
Since 1995 the Department of Psychology at UW Madison has ranked #1 among all U.S. psychology departments in attracting federal research money. Within Clinical Psychology, the UW ranks #1 in citation ranking and #9 in number of publications, for a composite ranking of #3. In recent years our faculty has edited many of the major research journals published by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychonomic Society, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.
With its high quality faculty and outstanding success in extramural funding, the department has state of the art research facilities, and extraordinary intellectual and physical resources. The Department has an unusually strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate education. With regard graduate education, for example, in 2004 the department received the Award for Innovation in Graduate Education in Psychology sponsored by the APA’s Board of Educational Affairs in cooperation with the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology. With regard to undergraduate education, seven members of the faculty have received Distinguished Teaching Awards from the University.
The Department has also received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in recognition of its efforts in undergraduate education. Many of our faculty have joint appointments with several other Departments including Medicine, Physiology, Psychiatry, Women’s Studies and Zoology (Integrative Biology) and are involved in a wide variety of other research centers on campus: the Waisman Center for the Study of Developmental Disabilities, the Wisconsin Primate Research Center, the Mind-Body Institute, the Center for Neuroscience and the Neuroscience Training Program, the Institute on Aging, the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention, the Wisconsin Center for Research on Education.
Thus, the UW campus offers opportunities for interdisciplinary work between its superb undergraduate and graduate programs.
