We are pleased to welcome new academic advisor, Cesar Arroyo Calderon, to the Department of Psychology this semester. In this role, Cesar will provide academic advising and resources to undergraduate students, coordinate prospective undergraduate student programming for the department, and create new initiatives aimed at engaging, and supporting the success of, undergraduates from diverse backgrounds. Please join us in welcoming Cesar to the department!
UWPsych: How did you find your way to the Department of Psychology and this role as an academic advisor?
Arroyo Calderon: For the past six years, I have worked in higher education at Madison College as a student success coach and academic advisor. When I saw the opportunity to join the UW-Madison community, I decided to follow in the footsteps of many of my previous students and transfer to UW to continue growing as they have.
UWPsych: What do you enjoy most about working with students?
Arroyo Calderon: I enjoy learning about the students, their stories and dreams, and serving as a resource to help them achieve their goals.
UWPsych: What should students know about working with you?
Arroyo Calderon: As a first-generation college student from a low-income background who immigrated to the U.S. when I was 10 years old, I can relate to students with similar experiences. To me, the student is always going to come first. I’m here to be a resource like others have been for me. There is no small question, no dumb question. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll find it with them or for them.
UWPsych: What are you most proud of in your career so far?
Arroyo Calderon: Seeing all the students that I had a chance to work with come back and ask for a recommendation letter to a master’s program or come back to ask if they can become a tutor with the programs I have worked with or just come back to say hello and thank you.
UWPsych: Lastly, please tell us what you enjoy doing when you’re not at work.
Arroyo Calderon: I enjoy movies (check out Leo), finding great food spots around Wisconsin (eat at Dumpling Haus or the food truck Cinn City Smash), and planning my wedding for September 2024.
Please join us in welcoming Cesar to the department!
