Teaching Through Social Change: Fostering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through Community-Based Learning

Dr. Travis Wright is an Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology and Early Childhood Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is the co-founder of the BASES Project, a school and community-based intervention for preschool students experiencing homelessness, their families, and teachers. He is also the Faculty Director of the Morgridge Center for Public Service. Wright studies how schools influence social-emotional and identity development for children navigating challenging circumstances and how best to prepare teachers and related service providers to meet the needs of these students. Building on this work, Wright recently authored his first book, Emotionally Responsive Teaching: Expanding Trauma Informed Practices for Young Children. Previously, Wright served as Deputy Chief of Early Childhood for Washington, DC Public Schools where he also served as a public school teacher. In addition, Wright spent four years working as a school-based mental health counselor in Boston Public Schools.
