Sharon M. Guten Colloquium Series: Rich Lee, University of Minnesota

February 16, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Title: Racial socialization practices among Asian Americans and their families

Abstract: During the COVID19 pandemic, there has been an increase in anti-Asian hate and violence. It is therefore critically important to understand how Asian Americans and their families talk about racism, prejudice, and discrimination. In this presentation, I will draw upon an Asian Americanist perspective to understand the challenges and opportunities for Asian Americans in the midst of rising anti-Asian racism. I will review past studies my colleagues and I have conducted examining racial socialization practices in diverse Asian American families. These studies employ quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches and draw upon different types of family formations. I also will discuss new ways to move forward in scholarship and practice with a specific focus on how comics can be a relatable, approachable way to publicly engage in conversations about racial socialization.
This colloquium will be held virtually via Zoom. Please register here.
