Dr. Short investigates the impact of poverty on the developing brain from birth to age 3. This work takes a new look at links between poverty, the pre- and postnatal environment, and the emergence of executive functions in young children. One goal of this research is to determine whether aspects of the home environment and early experience may serve to buffer or exacerbate the impact of poverty on the developing brain. Dr. Short is an alumna of the Department, and mentors psychology students earning research credit in her Brain and Early Experience (BEE) lab.
